West Company's History of Business Assistance

Though the official mission statement is a bit longer, building better businesses is really, what West Company is about. West Company's goal is to provide resources that enable us all (business owners and the community) to work together Build Better Businesses. Although West Company has been around for eighteen years and as much as we try to spread the word, we still meet people who don't know who we are, or what we do, so we will start with that.

West Company began in 1988 as the Women's Economic Self-Sufficiency Training Company or WEST Company. In 1991 , West Company incorporated as West Enterprise Center (dba West Company), a 501(c)3 not for profit corporation. The WEST acronym no longer applied, as West Company services were now available to all who wished to start or grow a business. In the 90's West Company focused on the needs of the emerging welfare-to-work population. Recent changes in funding have led West Company to offer its services to anyone regardless of their income. West Company continues to provide free services to low-income entrepreneurs through private and government funding. Those who can afford services may purchase them at market rates. West Company specializes in assisting small businesses with five or few employees (microenterprises). This is done through workshops and one-one consulting on a variety of business topics such as marketing, finances and management.

West Company has annually participated in the Aspen Institute's Microtest, a national evaluation program. Through this third party outcomes analysis we know that among West Company clients, the net reduction of households out of poverty was 45% . In 2005, clients who had average revenues at intake grew those revenues by 67.4%. West Company participants created 38 jobs for themselves and others. Sixty-five individuals attended one or more workshops and West Company delivered 1395 hours of one-on-one consulting to businesses in Mendocino County .

You would be surprised at the number of businesses around town that have been assisted by West Company over the years. Here are just a few: Bamboo Garden Spa, Café One, Café Vienna, Cooking Up Ideas, Cowlick's, Evergreen Barn Pet Supply, Icons, and Toto Zaida.
